The East Petersburg Lions Club is Sponsoring the National History Day Competition. The following information explains this exciting program’s needs and uses.

• Many school districts in PA have cut out or cut down on teaching History due to the “No Child Left Behind Initiative”(NCLB).  NCLB requires the schools to focus on Reading, Writing and Math.  Schools are rewarded with funding if they meet these standards.  Essentially this has caused schools to make those academic areas their primary if not singular focus.

• National History Day (NHD) is in essence, a science fair for history.  It effectively has middle and high school level students creating projects of college caliber.  They need to focus on primary research, living people and artifacts.  Using secondary research, the typical level of research used in most schools; books, articles, etc., for supporting information.

• In this region each student is currently charged an entry fee of $15.  This helps to cover the costs of the event: rental table and chairs, building space, lunches for students and judges, trophies, local history awards, copying and postage needs, certificates and contest materials (rule books, judge handbooks, etc.).

•  The budget in years past has been around $6,000.00.  There were two large grants that were lost due to the economy, which forced me to adjust the budget to $3500.  At this point in time, the program  $400 short.

• The East Petersburg Lions Club is in need of only two more volunteers to help monitor on the competition day.  A monitor’s job is to keep the judges on a schedule, maintain order with spectators and students, and enjoy the work of the students.  Lunch is also provided for those who work during that time.

•  At the State level, we need many more judges and monitors.  The PA Competition is held at Millersville University and is a two day event…May 12th and 13th.

• For the Lions and NHD, it will make a perfect marriage.  I understand the need to make Lions more visible and have new service projects, and these events can help by exposing the Clubs to 500+ people at the regional level and over 1000 at the State Level.  With advertising and publicity even more are informed.
